Technical Expedition Course
Expedition Outline
In the pre-monsoon season of 2015 Vertical Resources is running a 32 day expedition to Nerikha Peak and Lobuje East as part of a Technical Expedition Course (TEC). This TEC is aimed at giving you basic to intermediate skills to run your own simple expedition or be a member on a more technically challenging trip. We will cover basic rope and rock craft as well as instruction on the use of crampons and ice axes, glacier travel, fixed lines, snow and ice anchors as well as expedition logistics and planning.
- Expedition Cost: $5,500 USD (excl flights)
- Start date: 1st March 2015 (Kathmandu)
- End date: 1st April (Kathmandu)
- Duration: 32 days
Expedition Overview
The expedition will start in Kathmandu where we will check gear and make last minute purchases in Thamel before flying into Lukla (2,840m). From Lukla we will follow the trail up and into the Solo Khumbu to Namche Bazar (3,750m). From Namche we will leave the crowds behind and move to the western side of the Solo Khumbu to base ourselves near the small village of Thame where we will begin training on the local crags and start our acclimatisation program.
After Thame we will then slowly make our way over the Renjo La (5,300m) and down to the magnificent Gokyo Lakes where we will spend a few days acclimatising and climbing Gokyo Ri (5,357) before moving our major objective of Nerikha Peak (6,169m). Nerikha Peak is a more technically challenging peak than Lobuje East; you can expect to be jumaring / climbing up to 50% ice with an amazing and spectacular view!
From Nerikha base camp we will cross the Cho La (5,420m) and make our way to Lobuje East lake camp. Lobuje East (6,120m) is moderately straight forward from a technical perspective. The high camp of 5,800m offers a wildly magnificent campsite situated on a small ridge with outstanding views of Everest, Nuptse, Ama Dablam and many of the other Himalayan giants. Here you will be putting into practice everything that you have learnt so far. We will be planning meals and packing food for high camp, sorting ropes, technical equipment, tents and stoves.
On completion of Lobuje East we will trek back down to Lukla, visiting the town of Namche and the Tangboche Temples on the way and then fly back to Kathmandu.
