NZ Guiding

The Plan

Acclimatisation
Basically were heading up directly into the Khumbu and following the main trekking trail up to Gokyo Lakes. Once we get there we’ll make use of Gokyo Ri and the ranges behind Gokyo To acclimatise. I saw this particular peak a few years ago after crossing over the Renjo La and always wanted to come back and give it a bit of a crack. It should provide us with a good shake down mission. We’ll be up here playing for about 4 days before coming down for a rest and making our way to Cholaste basecamp

Climbing Cholaste
The Sw ridge is a soaring 1000m high thin sinuous ridge. After arriving in basecamp we will start to move loads up the mountain to the base of the headwall bounding the SW ridge. From there we can establish ourselves on the Col of the SW ridge and make an attemp to the ridge proper. we may end up fixing some line around the lower technical rock steps to save time on our summit attemt.

All up we have 12 days to play on Cholaste – Basecamp is a wonderfull place to hang out and enjoy the sun and rock on rest days

Support
The only support we will have is the standard trekking support and a basecamp cook etc. We won’t be using Sherpa support on the mountain for load carrying.

Flying Attempts
Over the last few years I have been getting involved ina sport where you fly down mountains under a canopy similar to both a paraglider and skydiving rig – it’s called speed-riding or speed-flying. Last year I flew a 14m square wing from just over 5000m and landed at 4300m – this year I’ll try to go a little better than that – an I’m also taking a 12m2 wing for good measure.
